For a weary traveler, this hostel has potential to be an oasis. It’s affordable, offers clean bunk-bed accommodations, has full kitchen and a grill for you to prepare your own meals, and has a comfortable and eclectic living room area with several different tables and seating areas. The living room has large windows that open up to the incredible view of the lake. There’s a dock that guests are welcome to hang out on; however, swimming in the lake is illegal. You can stay in a co-ed room with 12 beds or a single-gender room with 6. There is also a small food cart on the property if you don’t want to cook. Otherwise, it’s a long haul to the nearest grocery store or restaurant. The staff offer a few trips into downtown and there is a bus that goes by, otherwise you'd be stranded to nowhere special.

Hosteling International Austin is perfect for the traveler on a low or tight budget. All rooms are shared and are divided by gender with a few that are co-ed. There are bunk beds in each room with provided linens and small locker spaces. For a larger locker, the guest would deposit $5, which will be returned, in exchange for the key and lock. Laundry facilities are available at $1.50/load and restrooms with showers are shared. The guest can also enjoy complimentary breakfast and WIFI. There is also a kitchen available for use with a full refrigerator, dishes, pots and pans, microwave, stove, and dishwasher. The common room consists of a television, couches, dining tables, and even a piano to entertain for anyone wanting to play some music. Very affordable, but considering it is a hostel it is not a luxurious setting.

One of Austin's only hostel options, this HI-affiliate provides an amiable, laid-back atmosphere where budget travelers can experience the local area in a casual, communal setting. Rooms are dorm-style and self-service facilities include laundry, lockers and a full kitchen and dishwasher. The front desk is 24 hours and the friendly staff organizes various events and inner-city trips for guests. Downtown isn't within walking distance, but guests can easily take a short bus ride to get to most anywhere in the city. It's an ideal place if you don't have much money to spend and are looking to meet other travelers.

I felt like part of the tribe as soon as I got here. Friendly folks showed me all the room options, the big kitchen and their fancy backyard, which is actually a city park on the river. It's an amazing location for a hostel. May not be right in the heart of the action, but it's a nice, scenic walk away. Or get a bike and make it speedy. The rooms are shared. You can get a private one if you like. They have a TV room. They have volunteers do meals and you'll get an insiders view of the city.
