While Hostels are huge overseas, they don’t seem to have really caught on in the US yet (we American’s aren't ones for sharing), so I was really curious to check out Hostelling International’s property in Boston to see what it was all about. I've stayed in some seriously sketchy hostels in my time, so I was pleasantly surprised by the clean, fresh, fun atmosphere of HI’s Boston location. The place has a sort of “industrial-chic” look to it, with lots of stainless steel, exposed pipes and fun bright colored accents. It’s minimalist (it’s a hostel after all), but well done. And the entire complex is supposedly green—as in eco-friendly! You technically have to be an HI member to stay here, but you can also purchase annual membership upon arrival ($0-28) or pay a fee of $3 per day for a temporary membership, in addition to the standard room rate, which generally starts around $40, depending on availability and time of year. The other super cool part of HI is the variety of community events they arrange, like yoga classes, trivia nights, bowling excursions and midweek mixers—all for an affordable cost, if not free! This is a great place to meet people, not just from Boston, but all around the world.

I couldn’t believe this place was a hostel. Well, besides the young crowd, hip environment, and encouragement of traveling culture, yes I could. But Hostelling International’s newest location in Boston is truly a sight to see. It’s hip, it’s urban, and most importantly, it’s cheap for youthful travelers. Not only is breakfast free, but also so are their provided activities on their ever-changing bulletin board! Single or dorm room, each unit had the bare basics of a bed, television, and linens, yet seemed so luxurious. A big attention catcher was the uniquely Bostonian accent of the T in the building. Each floor is color-coordinated with a T line, and each bathroom has a T shower curtain that was all sorts of cool.
