This place puts other hostels to shame by proving a hostel doesn't need to feel cheap and, well, hostelly. (Yes, that's clearly a real adjective.) Paulina is clean, well-kept and attractive, with water features such as a koi pond, a huge rooftop terrace with nice views and architecture to rival more expensive hotels. A range of options is available, from private one-person rooms to 12-person dorms with bunk beds. Both single-sex and mixed rooms are available, and all rooms include storage lockers, clean sheets and towels. Breakfast and wifi are included, which is generous considering prices start at 175 pesos (a little more than US$13 today). The one knock is that the private rooms don't have bathrooms, but the shared bathrooms are large and clean. Also, despite the name, people of all ages are welcome at Paulina.

  • Hostelling International - Paulina Youth Hostel

Paulina Youth Hostel, three blocks from the town square, is one of the nicest hostels I've ever seen. The rooms are clean and simple, with three to 12 beds in a room, and a small koi pond and a cute little garden offer respite from downtown. The hostel also has a courtyard, a rooftop terrace and a small lounge with sofas, three computers and a bookshelf with guidebooks and light reading. The low prices include breakfast, WiFi in the common areas (pick a room downstairs if you want WiFi in your room), linens, blankets and towels, in-room lockers, 24-hour hot water, safety deposit boxes, luggage storage and motorcycle and bicycle parking. The hostel offers male dorms, female dorms, mixed dorms and private rooms for one to four people. Pick a room upstairs if you want to be near the largest bathrooms. You can buy water, soda and beer in the lobby, but avoid getting loud after 10 p.m. – the hostel enforces quiet hours. Smoking is allowed in the private rooms, but not in the dorms. Also, even though its called a "youth hostel," guests of all ages are welcome.
