In the heart of Portland’s East Hawthorne street, this eco-friendly hostel is constantly in high-demand for both its location and its excellent rates. It has dorms and priavte rooms with shared bathrooms.
Although the rates and the convivial hostel atmosphere are some of the biggest draws of this place, plenty of people seek it out because of its eco-friendliness. The hostel ahs bike rental available and offers discounted rates to people who are on self-supported bicycle tours. They also have an eco-roof (essentially a garden on the roof that helps absorb rainfall), a cob oven, and a rainwater harvesting system. They have laundry facilities onsite (evening use only) and are across the street from a Laundromat. They also have secure bike storage and there’s plenty of free, on-street parking in the area. However, the hostel is on one of Portland’s busiest bus lines, so if you’re looking to keep your carbon footprint low or save money on a car rental, then it’s better to bus it.

The location on Hawthorne is perfect for the young (or young at heart) traveler. The hostel is in the heart of the “Hollywood District” and offers great music, cheap eats, and lots of shopping. The woman in charge, wearing an engineer hat, showed me around this well-oiled machine. I loved the backyard that has it’s own composting station and a large stage for open mic nights- with all the traveling musicians through Portland during the summer, it’s be really fun to be at. Even more unique is their workshop room with workshops like how to travel alone. They are environmentally friendly and have a chance to showcase it through their “living roof” and rainwater efforts. There are separate boy and girl dorms and co-ed rooms, bathrooms with showers, a communal kitchen, lockers and laundry, cheap bike rentals, its close to public transit, and they offer tons of information on attractions, nightlife, events, etc. It is an older house though, so make sure to bring something warm to sleep in at night.

My first impression of this hostel from the outside was that it was a house that needed some work.
That fleeting thought vanished on entering the house which I found to be warm and caring. The staff were superb in welcoming their clientele into what is after all a hostel mainly for the young traveler.
The decor was not rough but utilitarian and clean, and both staff and clientele were very courteous and respectful. They clearly had considerable pride in the hostel as seen by the cleanliness and appointments of the private rooms, and its green business. The hostel also provides wifi and information to help the traveler see Portland.
The hostel's location on SE Hawthorne puts it within easy reach of downtown Portland and the amenities, makes it a great place to stay and a hub for events it hosts.
