This Hostelling International location was highly professional and clean. I enjoyed staying here very much. A quick walk to the National Mall, yet also conveniently located near the other hip areas of D.C., it really offered all anyone could ask for in a hostel.

One should always reserve ahead of time if possible, as I saw a young girl walk in trying to make a reservation and failing. She was directed to a nearby Marriott.

This place is clean, comfortable and CHEAP! Rooms with bunk beds are designated for men, women or both. They are small and dark, but there’s a big TV room with comfy chairs, a game room with pool table and piano, and a common room with eight computers and free Internet access. A free continental breakfast is served in the cafeteria, but there are also tables and chairs on the patio. A chalkboard shows free events – one day was a tour, another was dinner (chili). At about $39 per night per guest, you could get a room with a friend for about the same price at a two-star hotel. But hosteling is about meeting new people, and the day I was there I heard a lot of European accents. Keep in mind that even though they are called “youth” hostels, about half the guests are much older.

For a centrally-located hostel, this one is very well equipped. There's free breakfast in the morning, a 24/7 kitchen, a TV room with 500 channels and a movie collection, and a library. The dining area is cheerful and bright.

You can sign up for volunteer-led tours of neighborhoods and monuments, as well as pub crawls.

The Wi-Fi is free, but lots of folks aren't carrying their computers. So, internet access is available at $3/hr – much like in the internet cafes one tends to use abroad.

If you're looking to meet other young hostellers, the best time is in the early evening, after dinner, before everyone heads out to night spots.

There's a nice mix of international and US visitors to this hostel. Most stay around three nights, but you can stay for up to fourteen. The staff is friendly and helpful. You get a map when you check in, and there are brochures and information in the common living area. All the downtown attractions are within walking or biking distance.

If you are looking to relax after a day of sightseeing or job hunting, Penn Quarter is a good bet. The area near the Verizon Center has lots of new restaurants and snack places. Or you can head up to the U Street corridor, with its seemingly endless collection of pubs and music venues.
