“Memories were made of this….” My first night in, I was happy at 1829. In the halcyon days, I was a frequent visitor to its lively bar and fine dining restaurant. Ahhh, those mango soufflés were perfection, the music, too, with ladies in long dresses and men in tropical whites. B&W pics of this era line the interior stone walls. The charismatic owner, Baron Vernon Ball, ex-fighter pilot, was the world backgammon champion in 1976. Vernon lives in the States now, but his son and daughter oversee the hotel.
1829 remains a glorious landmark of the colonial era, built by a Frenchman, who was in shipping. The stonework was ship’s ballast, the wooden ceilings constructed like a ship.
My simple guestroom (#10), was three flights up stone steps, past the amber waterfall, and overlooked the petite pool. It was spacious, (some are not) and you hear nothing.
I passed the evening at the bar reminiscing to Doug, the hip barkeep’, after the manager, Wade, (both expats’), made sure that I needed naught. What with the mellow music, the camaraderie, the 151 pina coladas, I felt like I was 20-something all over again.
