Hotel 73 is a small boutique hotel that might easily be overlooked if you don’t know what you’re looking for. The rooms were designed by fashion design students, with a different group designing each room, so each one is different. The rooms are small but clean and have everything you need—bed, television, desk and chair, mini-fridge, and a bathroom with a shower and/or tub. It feels cozy rather than small. The design theme has that mod-artsy black/white/red thing, and the lobby has low retro vinyl sofa-chairs with students’ photography showcased along the walls. There’s also local artists’ handiwork for sale on display by the service counter. There’s a touch-screen computer for public use in the lobby, along with tea and instant coffee packets. The luggage-weighing scale is a nice touch. It’s really very cute, feels kind of like a hotel put together by a bunch of art students (and in a way, it is). It’s very well priced, and would be good for backpackers or student travelers.

The design of Hotel 73 is very modern and sleek. The hotel makes you feel like you’re in an art gallery, which makes it a little hard to approach. It doesn’t feel very relaxing. There’s even artwork and photography on display in the lobby, along with little crafts and designer items for sale, really designed like a little art gallery. The rooms are simply designed and furnished, but have kind of that artsy feel. Very playful, but you can tell that the designers also considered the guests’ comfort. The bathrooms are very clean, with deep bathtubs. The only shortcoming is the location, which isn’t that good. It’s on Xinyi Road, which is a major thoroughfare in Taipei and wouldn’t be difficult to travel by taxi, but there’s no MRT nearby. It’s just kind of different from your average hotel.

Hotel 73 is a clean, trendy, and cheap option for lodging in the Taipei area. My wife and I were living in Taiwan at the time. We took the high speed rail and walked to the Hotel 73. I was surprise to find modern decor in the lobby and lounge area and also in the bedroom. The bedroom was small, not what westerners are used to, but it was an efficient use of space. We had a flat screen TV on the wall with plenty of channels (Animal Planet, Discovery, HGTV, and National Geographic were all in English). They had plenty of modern-looking shelving space and a spacious bathroom. The bed was comfy, not a typical hard Asian mattress. The staff was friendly and helpful. We could smell cigarette smoke in the hallway and the staff kindly took care of the problem for us, no questions asked. Breakfast was included in our stay and we enjoyed it. It was a mix of western and Asian breakfast, but we especially enjoyed the espresso machine. We split up our stay in Taipei between this hotel and another, but we wished we had just stayed at this one, especially for the money.
