May well be the best run hotel in continental Europe. And this for someone who does not love Berlin. Superb, flawless service, surprising value and unbeatable location!

I didn't even know of the Adlon Kempinski's fame until we arrived on that freezing January night and trudged through the half frozen puddles and slush-covered ground to the wrong Kempinski location across the city. When they couldn't find out reservations, they told us we might have booked the Adlon...the 5-star posh, security-at-the-front-door luxury hotel next to the Brandenburg Tor.
Right. When we finally got to the right one, my breath caught in my throat - this is one fancy schmancy place, and the prices prove it. (We had gotten a deal on the room.) We never ate here, because there are plenty of better, authentic German eats nearby, but we did sit in the beautiful lobby bar one night, where my glass of white wine cost more than my dinner.
Costs aside, though (and really, if you're looking into this hotel, you have to know it's top-notch), the room was pure heaven. A big, divinely comfortable bed, light dimmers (which make the room very romantic), plenty of closet and storage space, a panel next to the bed with light and temperature controls, and a big, black marble bathroom with a deep bathtub and honey-scented bubble bath. *sigh* I indulged myself every night with a glass of expensive champagne and a soak in warm honey water...pure bliss, especially since it was freezing in Berlin that week.
The location is great - within walking distance to a good portion of the city (and a front-row view of the beautiful Brandenburg), but also near public transport options if your destination is farther out. And a Starbucks across the street is a good (cheaper) alternative to the hotel food. :)
Later, watching the same corner of the hotel where we stayed get blown up in Liam Neeson's movie "Unknown" was truly hair-raising.Recommended for

Adlon is elegantly built on this stunning 20th Century Palais and offers a remarkably good stay. The ‘junior suite’ with its luxuriant décor and serene courtyard views was wonderful. The breakfast was prepared to perfection, and service was professional, though somewhat rigid. The ‘Brandenburg Gate’, ‘Holocaust Memorial’ and ‘CheckPoint Charlie’ are notable sights nearby.
