- Hotel AitanaFirst to ReviewDec 19, 2012
Hotel Aitana isn’t impressive from the outside, but it’s surprisingly cute and comfortable inside, with spacious rooms, a covered courtyard and an ample rooftop terrace. Rooms can be dark, with internal-facing windows, but they have high ceilings with fans, coffee makers, desks and – rare in Oaxaca, especially in this price range – bathtubs. Colorful pottery and whimsical sculptures provide cheerful accents throughout the hotel, and shared amenities include free purified water in the courtyard, a couple of computers and some guide books. The restaurant offers breakfast and, sometimes, dinner. When I visited, it was offering a prix fixe “menu del dia” for less than $7. Guests will likely hear noise from big concerts or festivals at the nearby Guelaguetza auditorium. The hotel often offers discounts from the posted prices, so you might try negotiating if you’re coming off season (not during a holiday or a big festival) or planning a longer stay.

Once you get past Aitana's less-than-inviting exterior, you find a nice, quiet hotel in a good location for exploring Oaxaca. The spacious rooms are comfortable and well-equipped with coffee makers and TVs, although they are a bit darker than I would prefer. The tranquil courtyard has a restaurant -- meals are extra -- and the rooftop terrace is a popular gathering spot for guests with laptops. Nice touches include attractive local artwork in the hallways and stairwells, a computer for guests and drinking water in the atrium. The hotel is larger than most in Oaxaca, but it feels more intimate than it is. The manager seemed a bit distracted, but he was friendly enough and spoke pretty good English. All the important downtown landmarks are walkable, and taxis are easy to find on the busy street that runs in front of the hotel.
