Beautiful old Venetian building. Hotel Al Sole is at a point that is equidistant from touristy Venice and local Venice. The hotel is walking distance to the Ferrovia (10 minutes) and 5 minutes from Campo Santa Margherita, a buzzing night spot with excellent, affordable dining and snacks. Also very close to the legendary Tonolo Bakery. Rooms are spacious, clean and fresh smelling. The service is very pleasant as well.Recommended for:

This might be my favorite hotel in Venice. It’s 700 years old and has tons of beautiful medieval details like arched windows (reminding me of the shapes you see on Moorish buildings in Spain) and exposed wooden beams along the ceilings. There’s a big outdoor eating pavilion with wisteria hanging overhead and a delightful bar area that feels like an old tavern (except with really nice furnishings). While the lobby floor has low ceilings and a dark charm, the upper floors are bright and spacious (thanks to skylights and recent remodeling). The junior suite had a small living-room area with a couch/bed, a perfectly decent double bed in the other room (with views of the canal and the garden), and a small, simple bathroom. The other amenities were on par with other hotels of this caliber: heater/AC in the room, safe in the wardrobe closet, buffet breakfast, wi-fi for 5 Euros an hour (or 8 Euros a day), a printer and computer downstairs, an elevator, drinks and snacks available at aperitivo time. One cool feature, though, is a hole in the ground in the bar area that looks like a well but is actually a way to measure the water level of the canals outside – just in case you forgot the whole city is sinking into the sea. (If that idea bothers you too much, stop in at Bar Al Carcan Burschetteria next door and drink away your worries.) All in all, this is a beautiful hotel with an interesting history, near the train station but in a quiet, charming part of the city. Awesome.Recommended for:

14th century. Nice location on canal. Out of touristy area, but relatively close to everything. Nice eating are in the garden. Small rooms. Perfect view on canal and " Venice roof". Quiet at night. They offer free trip to Murano museum of glass.

Though it was pouring rain when I got there, it was so welcoming in there that I felt better as soon as i got inside. It felt like I was somehow entering into old Venice without being in a museum - the history is a natural part of it. Even the furniture in parts of the hotel seemed as old as the building was. I liked the cool marble floor in the bar and the water-level-meter thing just sitting in the middle of the room. There's also a beautiful patio covered with wisteria. The room seemed like a traditional Venetian-styled room, except for a really cool carved headboard with the image of a sun on it and a great view of the city’s rooftops. It’s also in one of my favorite parts of town. Another bonus is that the hotel has a printer in the lobby. I must say, too, that I’m really bummed I didn’t take them up on their free trip to Murano.Recommended for:
