Something about this hotel reminds me of the nicer dorms I saw when checking out colleges so many years ago. It’s that feeling of communality, convenience, utility, and no-frills attractiveness that I remember from newer buildings at UCSB and UC Santa Cruz. There are vending machines and menus for nearby restaurants in the lobby, a couple dining rooms that can be cordoned off for groups, a big lobby area that’s easy to imagine filled with a whole traveling soccer team and their moms, and a little gravel-covered garden area good for unwinding after a day of sight-seeing. The room was fine – no frills, but nice enough, though it’s too bad the wireless is only accessible from the ground floor. But I got the feeling that this isn’t the kind of place people come to hang out in their rooms. It’s more like a youth hostel for grown-ups. (It's also worth noting that Ezra Pound apparently lived here for two years, presumably in one of the nicer rooms with private bath and canal view.)

Hote Alla Salute is in a more quiet geographical location of Venice, right near Santa Maria Della Salute, one of the jewels of Dorsoduro, also near the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Rooms are extremely large and comfortable with modern amenities. There is a pretty garden where breakfast is served during the summer season and a comfy lounge area in the lobby. Vending machines were available in the lobby as well, in case you need to buy cheaper water or snacks before leaving for the day. Also close to Fondamenta Zattere, a good place to catch some rays and have a gelato.

This place is in a beautiful location that’s delightfully out of the way, right near the Giudecca canal. The room itself was nothing special, but it had a great little balcony over the water. The real treat, though, is the common spaces: which are a nice luxury in a city where space is so limited (and quiet space even more so). There are several outdoor sitting areas perfect for spending an afternoon with a coffee and a book. There also are a number of cheap eating options, including order-in pizza from a nearby restaurant. I wouldn’t necessarily come back here with my girlfriend or even my mom, but I think it’d be a great spot for a group of friends, or a tour group, or a workshop.

What's not to like - I mean really you're in Venice. And especially for this city it is worth staying on the island itself so invest a little extra! This being said the lobby and breakfast was fine. The room itself was not quite so. Very cold at night and a lot of noise in the corridors. The phone and lamp didn't work. So for the price and location this hotel is fine and I would probably return. However do not expect to much luxury upon arrrival and everything will be fine. Profit from this magnificant city to the fullest!
