Now, this is a nice hotel. Perhaps even more importantly, this is one of the most historic hotels in town. That’s largely due to the fact that when it was renovated, it wasn’t gutted and rebuilt with modern furniture and all that. Much of this hotel remains charmingly vintage, including the exposed steel-beams you’ll find by the stairs, and the glass-windowed doors that lead to each room. Even the door knobs bear the Burnham name. The hotel rooms feature nice art on the walls, cool views of the Loop, and shower curtains embroidered with an ornate “B”. There’s a sufficient gym and the elevators are also pretty old-school. The downstairs restaurant is a nice place to have a meal, and the lobby has a fireplace that will help you warm up in the colder months. This one’s a winner.

This is a stately hotel, very nicely designed. The lobby is warm and welcoming (love the giant Jenga game set up across from the front desk). Like many hotels in Chicago, the rooms are quite small, but they use the space well, I think. I don't care for the view; it's a bit too commercial for my taste. The Atwood Cafe is charming, though. I had a nice Sunday brunch there.

The room was slightly smaller than standard, but not by enough to cause a serious problem. I enjoyed an excellent view of the street and landmark Chicago Theatre sign. Kimpton has done a good job of creating a guest space that is unique and fanciful without being tacky.

The Burnham is an interesting Kimpton property in that it is a converted office building and retains a lot of its historic features. They handed me an old-timey metal key to get into my room and the layout is a little funky with a small hallway to get to the bathroom. The elevators are beautifully designed and worth admiring. The beds are just okay, and the TVs aren't the newest. But if you're lucky to get a corner room with gorgeous big windows, you'll have quite a view to enjoy.
