There's a million hotels in this neighborhood that kind of look like this one from the outside – 5 or 7 stories, boring cement building – but this one has character on the inside inside. Art covers every wall – some of it beautiful indigenous handcrafted work, some of it tacky oil paintings of sunset, but none of it boring. The rooftop pool was being repaired when we were there, but it's pretty, with a little garden and tiled patio. There's also a small gym with several machines for the exercise-oriented guest. The lobby has lots of chairs and couches that you can hang out in. The rooms are small but have AC and nice TVs. You just get the feeling that someone's put a lot of love into this place.Recommended for:

The Panamanian weather can take some getting used to so I was eager to walk in to the lobby of the Hotel California, one of the only hotels we reviewed that piped in AC to comfort those registering. After cooling down a spell I noticed that the owners had done an excellent job of decorating the lobby and hallways with Spanish clay tile, authentic paintings and various ethnic curios adding to the ambiance. The rooms themselves were immaculately clean, though particularly small and included AC, desk and telephone. On the top floor guests are invited to make use of the gym equipment or the super-sized hot tub. At $55 for two people the Hotel California hits that sweet spot between price and amenities.

Hotel California is where Panama's Peace Corps. volunteers stayed for many years. The hotel restaurant is relatively inexpensive and tasty. For traveler's the price is right: you get a relatively comfortable bed, cable TV, and warm water. What more do you need? The receptionists are amazing and will help you find what you need around the city.
With that being said, I wouldn't bring mom and dad here for more than a night or two. The accommodations are basic and don't necessarily fit the expectations of the middle-aged American tourist.
