If you can find your way into Casa Arnel -- ask at the cafe if (when) you're confused -- the eclectic hotel is a good off-the-beaten-path option with relatively low prices. With some rooms rented monthly by long-term visitors, Casa Arnel feels like more of a community than other hotels. Located in Oaxaca's charming Jalatlaco neighborhood, the hotel's heavily planted courtyard includes several parrots, some which talk and most in disturbingly small cages. The bare-bones rooms are clean and basic, but the extras make Casa Arnel a decent hotel: the oddly decorated terrace that overlooks neighboring San Matias church, the library guests can use freely, hammocks for relaxing and a series of weird iron catwalks connecting various levels. Employees are friendly and speak a little English, and you're likely to strike up a conversation with one of the long-term guests.

The rooms at Casa Arnel are basic but clean, with two wire-frame beds, a fan, a single shelf-cum-desk and a thin towel for each guest. But the grounds are lush, with parakeets, finches and parrots (some in lamentably small cages) that greet guests with "Hola!" and several eclectically decorated terraces to play or lounge in – including one hung with brightly colored, inviting hammocks. There's even a library for guests and a restaurant that offers breakfast (not included.) Just across the street from the Inglesia de San Matias Jalatlaco church in the historic Jalatlaco neighborhood, Casa Arnel is only a few minutes' walk to Santo Domingo church and downtown attractions. It's well positioned for Day of the Dead celebrations, located near Oaxaca's General Cemetery and the annual Jalatlaco Day of the Dead parade (commemorated in a mural across the street). All in all, Casa Arnel offers hard-to-beat value for the price.
