Casa Vertiz is a well-kept Colonial building with a shady courtyard, an ample rooftop terrace and fresh yellow, white and walnut paint and décor. It’s located on the street behind the beautiful Santo Domingo church, putting it near the main downtown attractions but away from most of the hustle and bustle. Guests will likely hear wedding receptions at the botanical gardens behind the church, but rooms are set well back from the street – behind a jewelry shop, courtyard and office – which should protect guests from most of the noise. The hotel has its own restaurant, but check out the popular La Olla restaurant next door for inexpensive, traditional “comida corridas,” or prix fixe lunches. The rooms, with either two double beds or one king bed each, come with all the usual amenities – including hair dryers, coffee makers, safes and irons – and some harder-to-find ones, including air conditioning, cable and WiFi.

Casa Vertiz is a nice, comfortable example of the kind of mid-range hotels that surround Oaxaca's iconic Santo Domingo church. The inn's 14 rooms, which surround the hotel's two lushly vegetated atria, are clean and extremely well-stocked; they include TVs, coffee makers, irons, safes and hair dryers. The front-desk staff was friendly and very helpful, but spoke very little English. Although breakfast and other meals are not included, the hotel has an open-air restaurant in one tranquil atrium. And, if guests tire of the on-site eatery, they can venture next door to Oaxaca's famed La Olla restaurant. Casa Vertiz's central location is perfect for exploring Oaxaca's cobbled streets. After a day of walking, guests can retire to the hotel's rooftop terrace, with views of Santo Domingo's domes and the hills surrounding the city.
