The sign with its name is missing, so it's easy to miss the three-story Hotel CasAntica. Look for signs reading "Hotel Alberca Pool" instead. But the hotel is worth hunting for. A former convent built in the 16th century, the hotel is graced with artifacts such as stained glass in the lobby. Rooms display exposed brick, and delightful decorations – such as old sewing machines and, when I was there, a Day of the Dead art exhibit – adorn every corner of the hotel. Rooms also include air conditioning, flat-screen TVs with cable and access to a private safety deposit box in the lobby. The suites each include two rooms, in-room safes, two desks, chairs, irons, hair dryers and coffee makers. Only a handful of the downtown hotels have pools, and CasAntica's location one block from the zocalo makes it a rare find for the price, which includes breakfast, valet parking and taxes. Ask for a poolside room if you want to be sure to get a window.

It's tempting to delete a star from my rating because the hotel had no sign in front when we visited, making it hard to find, but CasAntica made up for it in other ways. Built on the site of a 16th-century convent, the 49-room hotel has done a nice job preserving some of the history while providing modern comforts. Signs of the old buildings exist here and there: twisting corridors, exposed brick walls, centuries-old religious art and stained glass. Those antique touches are interspersed with modern ones such as the swimming pool (rare in central Oaxaca hotels), wifi in common areas, air conditioning and flat-screen TVs. The front-desk clerk we dealt with was friendly and spoke perfect English. Breakfast is complimentary in the adjacent restaurant, which also serves lunch and dinner.Recommended for:History Buffs
