I have stayed in this hotel quite a few times. It's clean and modern and my favorite part is that while the furniture is exactly the same in all the rooms, the walls of each room are painted by a different artist. Their list of featured artists is impressive (Shepherd Fairy) and they will let you choose which room you'd like. They offer generous shampoo and conditioner and breakfast is included. Just a block or two from the gates of Chinatown, excellent cafes and restaurants, shopping, and public transport. I'm a big fan.Recommended for:

It's been years since I had the need to stay at a hotel in SF, but before I moved here I visited the City and stayed at Hotel des Arts. It's definitely for younger, hipper travelers. The rooms are all painted differently by artists, and I had a room with pink graffiti all over the walls. The bathroom was shared, like a dorm room, so I had to pack shower shoes and rush back to my room to avoid awkward hallway run-ins in my bath towel, but the hotel is small enough that I never actually ran into anyone. The free continental breakfast was nice, too. For the price back then, it was a great option for such a central location.Recommended for:

I love a stylish hotel, and Hotel des Arts is one of the most stylish hotels in San Francisco. The lobby is filled with really hip pop art, worthy of SF MoMA. The staff are really friendly and the location is tops.

It's quite an interesting hotel. Every room was painted by a different artist. We got a pretty "dark" kind of room. We only stayed for a night and for that it was great. The only problem is that it doesn't have ac and it got pretty warm. The location of the hotel is great, right by Chinatown.
Creations from local and international artists cover the walls from the lobby to the rooms. Wireless Internet is complimentary, as is the daily continental breakfast. For dining, Le Central, a French Brasserie, serves up some of the finest French bistro cuisine in the city.
Rooms include satellite televisions with movie channels, microwaves, refrigerators, hairdryers and irons, and two-line voice/data telephones. The exclusive Painted Rooms, featuring art from around the world, can be reserved by directly contacting the hotel.
