Gorgeous place to stay, beautiful rooms and a nice terrace stocked with free water and drinks for the day. Loved the terrace and the courtyard. Staff were very helpful in locating dining options and tour guides.

Beautiful hotel in Old San Juan with a gorgeous courtyard. The staff are awesome - very friendly and helpful. Cheese and wine happy hour for guests every evening. There is also a rooftop area with a tiny pool, hot-tub and sitting area.
Look for the bats in the courtyard in the evening.Recommended for:

One of our greatest finds when we travel is finding a hotel that is a combination of serenity and intimacy mixed with a comfortable dose of energy and inspiration – and this is often not an easy task. But the El Convento somehow has found a way to combine these very attributes. From the moment you arrive, this former Carmelite Convent built in 1646, once named the “Monastery of Our Lady Carmen of San Jose”, seems to open it’s arms and whisper a warm “welcome” to those who cross the threshold. The clean lines and pastel tones of the lemon-meringue exterior are accentuated by soaring white pillars, and the classic look of the gleaming black and white checker board floor refreshes the eye, but the heavy, dark wooden doors, stained glass, soaring ceilings and exquisite tapestries makes one appreciate the richness of history here, and imbue this hotel with sheer elegance.
Perhaps the tranquil musings of the Carmelite nuns permeated the very walls themselves, for as you wander throughout the property you find yourself breathing deeply as a welcome sense of calm suffuses your body.
El Convento offers a good selection of accommodations, from small courtyard rooms up to more spacious one bedroom suites. A few of them offer a small patio, and there is one exquisite Gloria Vanderbilt Suite, decadently finished and boasting choice antique furnishings and fabulous views. El Convento’s location couldn’t be more perfect for exploring the best parts of Old San Juan, and the property itself, from the intimate pool & Jacuzzi on the roof, to the lush Plaza de Las Monjas courtyard with it’s profusion of blossoms, trailing vines & mature trees instills a sense of contentment. The courtyard is especially enjoyable on a warm Caribbean evening as the warm glow of wrought iron lamps flicker in the warm breeze, tickling the hair on the nape of your neck, and you feel your hips swaying to the soft Latin-beat spilling out into the night air from El Picoteo restaurant.
Our Superior Room, while not the largest or most amazing room we have ever had, was nonetheless enchanting. Replete with Caribbean charm, the sea-foam coloured walls made a perfect back-drop for the dark wood headboard of the queen-size bed, (may we add, with a very comfortable mattress). The rich wood of the louvered French-shuttered doors opened to a “Juliet” balcony, which gave way to a wonderful view of the turquoise ocean in the distance, and the pastel rooftops of Old “Spanish Colonial” San Juan. The floors gleamed with a rich caramel sheen, colourful throw rugs warmed the space, small framed prints, and cool red and white bed linens & cushions added freshness.

This remarkable 200 old convent has since been transformed into an enchanting hotel. While it has been updated with all the modern conveniences like complimentary Internet and air conditioning, historical tributes remain through the ambiance and décor. El Convento is located in the center of the charming district of Old San Juan, directly across from the newly renovated cathedral. Upon entering the hotel everyone is immediately greeted by the incredibly friendly staff and made to feel at home.
There are only 58 guest rooms and suites on property, which gives the hotel an intimate feel. While there are several public areas that everyone is able to take pleasure in, there are many nooks and terraces reserved just for hotel guests. Guests can relax by the rooftop pool, sip sangria at the complimentary happy hour on the terrace overlooking the cathedral, or seek refuge from the heat in the library.
There are three impressive restaurants that all patrons are able to indulge in. The courtyard houses the Patio del Nispero, which can be enjoyed throughout the day during high season (December through March). The terrace is home to Picoteos, the Spanish tapas restaurant with some of the best food, waiters and flamenco found in Old San Juan. For those seeking a more casual experience, Pizza e Birra is perfect for a casual bite during a busy day of sightseeing. Whatever occasion brings you to El Convento it’s very likely that I will be there, welcoming you to my new favorite hotel with a Barrilito’s rum. See you soon!

El Convento is in the heart of Old San Juan and might actually be the heart of this sub part of town. Located across the street from a gorgeous, yet lovingly weathered, Catholic Cathedral, El Convento in it's former life was a convent. They have done a great job of updating the space but keeping true to it's beauty. The rooms are old world meets renovated with dark wood and marble floors but have updated bathrooms. The hotel sits across from a small square where live musicians sing to you as the sun sets. A truly memorable place.
Tip: There is a complimentary wine and cheese happy hour from 6-7- good wine and cheeses!

Gorgous hotel in charming Old San Juan. If you're looking for something other than the cookie-cutter hotel, try this place. Our room was spacious and well appointed, comfy bed, Aveda bath products. The rooms look down into a tree and flower filled courtyard. The staff was helpful and welcoming. They set us up with a wonderful guide for a trip to the rainforest and recommended a lovely restaurant for dinner. It was a bit pricier than the chain hotels on the beach but well worth it. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
