- Hotel Indigo Shanghai on The BundFirst to ReviewOct 21, 2013
Those familiar with this brand of boutique hotel know to expect an upscale experience with a few quirky touches absent from most large hotel chains. The concept behind the Indigo Hotel is "inspired by your neighborhood story", which explains the restored rickshaw in the lobby (painted a poppy red) and abstract carpet in the corridors meant to reflect an old Shanghai street map. The theme continues into the guest rooms where beds are flanked on one side by an antique-style Chinese nightstand and on the other by a sleek minimalist piece of furniture. The hotel’s style is funky casual and unlike anything else you’ll find in the overabundance of Bund-side hotels. Amenities such as natural shampoo and soap in the bathrooms, which also have large freestanding tubs, Japanese toilets and beautiful Chinese tile, help the hotel to strike the perfect balance between luxury and refreshing eccentricity. Be sure to check out the impressive river views from the hotel bar’s terrace.Recommended for:

Fun is exactly how I'd describe the Indigo, one with think that being Bund side it'd be quite stuffy and pretentious but this is not the case at all. The extremely welcoming and knowledgeable staff were just the icing on the cake of this great hotel. The design driven space has a very eclectic and creative tone which is nice to find in China as so much of the country, especially outside of the big cities is very militaristic and minimalistic. The design celebrates teh old and new Shanghai with historic pieces of furniture sitting along side very space aged "pudong-esque" pieces. The playful rooms have beautiful free standing bathrooms and if you're lucky enough to have a river view are the perfect place to spend an evening with a bottle fo wine watching the lights of the enormous city. The steak house Char is one of the cities finest, the food throughout the hotel is great. And the rooftop bar is the perfect place to have a drink or two before hitting the town on a warm evening.

Located between the historic Bund and the new Cool Docks development is the trendy Hotel Indigo. It’s a boutique hotel, so they don’t adhere to all the strict rules that govern “starred” hotels, and the result is a more design driven, trendy and almost playful feel. The concept behind the Indigo brand is “neighborhood” so the hotel incorporates specific elements of Shanghai, the Bund and even the Huangpu river in its design. The lobby has curved slatted wood walls, which are reminiscent of flowing water, as well as a metal structure that was once part of the shipping docks. The lobby also boasts artwork from resident artists ranging from oil paintings to a glass keyboard filled with miniature figurines. The rooms at the Hotel Indigo in a word: fun! They have a great mix of Chinese flair and modern fun. Bright carpets and lamps, comfortable furnishings and spacious bathrooms. And the amenities are all natural, so you don’t have to worry about damaging your tresses. The 5th floor is home to the Quay lobby, which is where you will find the all day dining as well as the business center. With a great view of the area, it’s a prime place to have breakfast and catch up on those emails (since the entire hotel has free WiFi). At the top of the structure, the 30th floor is CHAR, the steak and seafood restaurant. I get the impression they are branding it as it’s own restaurant, not necessarily a part of the hotel- but if guests get to go upstairs to dine in one of Shanghai’s best restaurants- all the better! The fitness area and pool are both small and clean, but have great views of he Pudong skyline and the Bund. It’s a fun boutique hotel that is a short walk or taxi ride to most of the cities sights and landmarks.
