Small but delightful, La Casona de Tita Hotel offers only six unique rooms, each adorned with original art. Originally a 19th century house, the hotel is one of seven Oaxacan hotels to receive the federal government's Tesoros designation for excellent hotels in historical areas. Tucked away in a quiet corner of downtown, the hotel is only a few blocks away from Santo Domingo church – and near restaurants, shops and a crafts institute next door – yet avoids most of the traffic and crowds. Only three of its rooms have windows (with a double layer of glass, plus shutters), but the slatted doors let some natural light into the other rooms. Rooms also come with Internet access, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, desks, hair dryers, robes and wardrobes. The courtyard is populated with canaries, an artsy chess set, black wicker chairs, a small tiled water element, sculptures and a restaurant that serves breakfast (included in the price).Recommended for:History Buffs

The only reason this place doesn't get five stars from me is that its small size (only six rooms) means it has few amenities. But don't get me wrong: I love this hotel. Yes, it's pricey, but it's one of Oaxaca's most attractive places to lay your head. The rooms, which front a small, tranquil courtyard, are beautifully furnished and decorated. Classy touches abound. A switch next to the bed can shut out the natural light from small skylights. A gorgeous metal chess set in the courtyard was designed by a local artist, who also provided paintings for some rooms. Some of the rooms have amazing bathrooms with sexy showers surrounded by gauzy curtains. Breakfast is included, but the on-site restaurant doesn't serve lunch or dinner.
