- Hotel Las MariposasFirst to ReviewNov 30, 2012
It's hard to find, with no permanent sign advertising its location, but Las Mariposas is worth the search if you're hunting for a budget option near Santo Domingo church. Simple but comfortable rooms are set back from the street, shielding guests from much of the downtown noise. (Plants and water fountains help too.) Six "studios" include kitchenettes, but all guests have access to an outdoor kitchen – including a refrigerator, oven, sink and microwave – as well as an outdoor living space with couches and a television and several patios with tables and chairs. The WiFi works in the common areas, but isn't reliable in the rooms. Each room differs in size, design and decoration – including many offered at the same price – so ask for the largest, most private or most comfortable option available when booking. The nearby Oaxaca Lending Library has books in English, a schedule of activities and drop-in English-Spanish language exchanges on Saturdays.

If you're looking for a more homey feeling while you're in Oaxaca, Las Mariposas is a good option. Like Doctor Who's police box, this hotel is bigger on the inside. Rooms, some with small kitchens, are scattered around the sprawling grounds, which are dotted with tranquil common areas, water features and trees. There's even a communal kitchen for guests. A light breakfast, served in the main courtyard, is included, and wifi is available in the common areas. This hotel feels a bit older and frayed around the edges than some other local options, but the owners have adopted some nice touches, such as colorfully painted bathroom sinks, and the prices are good. Visitors say they enjoy the feeling of community here. The central location makes it a good base for exploring Oaxaca.
