Here on the other side of Avenida de la República, one of Oaxaca's main thoroughfares, from the centro, life is a little quieter and a great hotel like Los Pilares is cheaper. This gem in the desirable Jalatlaco neighborhood is still only a short walk from main destinations like the Santo Domingo church, but the atmosphere is a lot calmer than it is on the busy streets just a couple of blocks away. For significantly less than the price of a room at, say, the Quinta Real, you can get a beautiful suite at Los Pilares that includes a whirlpool tub in a skylit room that makes you feel like you're outside. The rooms are clean and well-stocked with minibars, hair dryers, TVs and other amenities. The bar in the central atrium is a nice touch, and the rooftop terrace includes a smallish pool and hot tub, which neighbor the hotel's outdoor restaurant.

Don't be fooled by the name: Hostal Los Pilares is no hostel. (In fact, it changed its name to Hotel Los Pilares a year ago, but the signs still tout the old name.) While it's pricey for the location, it offers plenty of luxury for the price and could easily charge more if it were downtown. Los Pilares – a former tannery – boasts hand-painted floral designs, traditional ceramics and fresh lilies. The master suite I saw smelled of jasmine, and included a king bed, a small flat-screen TV, a mini bar, robes, a shower and a two-person Jacuzzi bathtub. The central courtyard has a bar, and the rooftop terrace includes a pool, a hot tub and seating for breakfast and dinner (not included.) Seven of the 15 rooms have courtyard-facing windows, two have external-facing windows and all have WiFi. Given the hotel's proximity to the busy Republica street separating the historic Jalatlatco neighborhood from downtown, an interior room would likely prove a quieter choice.
