Situated on the border of Union Square and the Tenderloin, the boutique Hotel Mark Twain is a breath of fresh air. The location is really ideal since it’s so centrally located, and on a quieter side street. The Tenderloin is easily avoidable. The lobby felt comfortable, warm and modern. Free Wi-fi is available throughout the hotel, and a computer and printer is available for use in the lobby.

Fish & Farm, the hotel restaurant located on the lobby floor, known for sustainable and local ingredients, makes it a destination for visitors and locals alike. The restaurant also provides in-room dining to hotel guests, and the lobby bar/lounge has a full bar with two beers on tap. If that's not a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, around the corner from the bar, is their fitness center which includes an elliptical, free weights, treadmill, stairmaster, stationary bike, balance ball, and yoga mat – pretty much everything you need in a small gym. Note that you do have to walk through the bar to get to the fitness center though.

The warmth of the lobby is also reflected in their cozy rooms. If you flip through their guide book, you can find some interesting tidbits on the history of the hotel, the city, as well as the immediate neighborhood. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and courteous. If you happen to bring a companion of the canine variety, they are also dog-friendly.

I fell in love with the Hotel Mark Twain when I saw a particularly uplifting quote by the writer above the concierge desk. That Fish & Farm, a great restaurant (with the “best burger” in SF as voted by 7x7 Magazine) and bar, sits on premises solidified the fact. It makes the hotel a place to be even if you’re a local San Franciscan.

The golden hues from the lobby thankfully extend to the rooms. Everything was very soothing and relaxing. The nice red linens on the beds make the décor pop. The bathrooms were very clean and well-maintained. Wi-Fi is free and there’s a fitness facility located inside the hotel.

The hotel sits between Grace Cathedral and Market Street on Taylor, and just a few blocks west of Union Square and Powell Street. It seems to cut close to the Tenderloin on the map, but it’s still in a pretty nice area. Just be aware of where you walk when heading (notably southwest of the hotel) and you’ll easily avoid any sketchy areas.

All in all, the Hotel Mark Twain is a lovely hotel with a great location, and I would recommend it even to my mother.

This is an older hotel, but it feels quite modern and has a really lovely, comfortably chic atmosphere. The entrance is warm and welcoming, and rooms here are spacious, light, nicely decorated and have coffee makers, safes and large closets. There’s free wifi, a fitness center, valet parking, and a restaurant in the hotel, Fish & Farm, with a cozy, candlelit ambiance and a focus on locally sourced food. The bar is in the lobby, but it's a bit tucked away, so, like the restaurant, it's cozier and more private than some hotel bars.

It’s a close walk to Union Square, but stick to that direction – the neighborhood gets a little sketchy if you go west, away from Union Square. There are a bunch of varied ethnic restaurants in the area.

Heads up if you're planning a trip with your pet - they are dog-friendly!
