3.5 stars: The Hotel Pacific is in a great area if you want to be more centrally located in Monterey (instead of just being close to Cannery Row). We booked last minute, so a lot of places weren't available, but I was pleasantly surprised by this place. From the property you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf in all its touristy glory, you are on the edge of the downtown area and the main streets there, and it is a short 15 min walk to Cannery Row along the walking trail. Also, you don't have to deal with the traffic and congestion of Cannery Row which is also nice.
The rooms in the hotel are quite large and (I think) they are all suites with a small eating nook plus a living room area with a fireplace plus a small balcony with 2 chairs and a table. The bed was comfy and the bathrooms have clearly recently been updated (complete with 2 different showers). They have a good, simple continental breakfast included in the room rate that will do the job if you're not super hungry in the morning. It served our needs perfectly well.
Parking is convenient, they have a large covered lot just for hotel guests, although it is a little annoying that they charge an additional $19/night for this parking. The only complaint I really have about this hotel is that the ceilings/floors are quite thin, so if you're not on the top floor, it sounds like there are giants walking around on the floor above you.
Tip: if you're sensitive to noise request a room that faces the courtyard instead of the street. The windows didn't seem to be double pane, so we could hear a lot of car traffic noise which didn't really bother us, but I could see how it might bother lighter sleepers.

When I like to go low key in Monterey I like to go here....especially since they have these great fire places....and it's all soooo close....walking distance close to the wharf. And you know how much I love that clam chowder. Not even the Monterey rain could keep me from getting a pint of the creamy stuff. And at the Grotto they also have this shrimp cocktail....between you and me I don't generally eat shrimp cocktail but this has changed my perspective and blessed me with an entirely new appreciation for it. The four post beds are just to die for.....no seriously, if I were to die I could not think of a more indulgently heavenly bed I would not pick another.....makes me sleepy just thinking of it. They also have this nice weather proof indoor downstairs parking garage.
