The "Palacio" in the name is a giveaway: This place is big on luxury. With only six spacious suites, all named after Italian cities, this hotel a block from the iconic Santo Domingo church caters to individual attention. Guests receive a complimentary handmade Oaxacan doll upon their departure and a glass of wine their last night, as well as fresh fruit every day. When we visited, the owners were a few days away from opening a spa on the rooftop terrace, complete with hot tub and massage services. The terrace, reached using a spiral staircase, also includes a bar and gorgeous views of Oaxaca, the valley and surrounding hills. It's hard to beat the hotel's location, just steps from some of the city's finest restaurants and one of Oaxaca's primary taxi-gathering spots.

Palacio Borghese is a luxurious Mediterranean-style hotel near restaurants, bars and downtown attractions. High white walls surround a small fountain in the courtyard, and a rooftop terrace – where the hotel plans to offer spa treatments within the week – includes a bar, pool chairs, a Jacuzzi, a shower and a great view of Santo Domingo. The hotel has only six suites, and the one I saw was tastefully appointed with a small chandelier, love seat, dining table and flat-screen TV. Suites also have hair dryers, safes, air conditioning, mini bars, bathrobes, slippers and WiFi. They don't have coffee or tea makers – but the hotel serves both during a continental breakfast and a daily tea, free for guests – or irons, which are available on request. The hotel is pricey by Oaxacan standards, but amenities include free fruit in the rooms each day, a free glass of red wine and a parting gift: a handcrafted doll in traditional dress.
