My first impression of the Pensione Ottaviani was comical: a beautifully carved stone sign on the street juxtaposed with a bright neon sign immediately indoors! Oh Italy! There isn't really a lobby to speak of, but the thing that is cool about this place is that it feels like you're in somebody's living room. There were kids watching TV in the lobby pretty much whenever I was there. The lady behind the desk was really sweet -- a really authentic kind woman. She was really available to answer my questions and ask how I was doing. I appreciated the hand painted decorations in the stairwell. This place was a good value for the price and generally has a good vibe. It's well located too -- right near some beautiful sites. I really appreciated that you could get coffee at pretty much any time of day or night. The room was super clean -- the whole place was squeaky clean actually and still maintained a relaxed atmosphere. There was a real charm in the curly Q bedframe (and the matching cafe-style tables and chairs in the breakfast room). I would definitely stay here again.

This spot is a perfectly good economic option, and it’s right near the historic Palazzo Ottaviani and a couple blocks from the river. The general feel is nice, but no frills. For example, the lobby doubles as a reception room and common area, and when I visited, there was a seemingly random child watching TV there while people checked in. The breakfast room is really nice, though, and feels like it belongs in a nicer hotel. The absolute best thing about this hotel was the room, which had a little desk and shelves and an adorably strange private shower in the corner on a little pedestal (though the toilets were shared). One thing to keep in mind is that the hotel has one of those stereotypical European elevators that feels like a closet, so if you’re claustrophobic, you’ll have to take two flights of stairs with all the stuff you've bought around town.

This is a really modest "hotel" in a really great location. A pensione is somewhere between a hostel and a full-service hotel. Not as nice as a "real" hotel, but nicer (and more private) than a hostel-- and priced accordingly. The owners are nice people, the bathrooms are shared (unless you get an ensuite bathroom), and the meager (read standard Italian) breakfast does the job of tiding you over 'til lunch (fantastic restaurants are just steps away-- what this place lacks in amenities, it makes up for in being perfectly located to walk anywhere in Florence)
