Pera Palace is one of Istanbul's grand old hotels, which were constructed in the Pera neighborhood of Beyoglu (the old diplomatic quarter) after the completion of the Orient Express during the 1890's. Pera Palace's main claim to fame is that it was Agatha Christie's favorite hotel in the city and the place where she wrote "Murder on the Orient Express." The hotel maintains a musuem in her old room. While in the last few decades Pera Palace fell into a tragic level of disrepair, the hotel has since been renovated and has regained its status as a symbol of old world European luxury.

This is also one of the historical landmarks of Istanbul... There are million stories took place in this hotel during the Ottoman era, 1st World War, when Istanbul was under occupation... Ataturk, Agatha Christie & many others used to stay at this hotel... lovely tea room on the left side of the reception desk... Pera Palace is a romantic hotel with a strong character... located in the heart of the city.

Constructed in the 19th century to welcome travelers from the Orient Express, and a haunt of Ataturk and Hemingway, the Pera Palace is full of historic tidbits like the litter used to pick up guests from the train and old menus in French. Run by Jumeirah these days, it's luxuriously tricked out with showers as big as some New York apartments, the now ubiquitous pillow menu, and beds you can comfortably disappear into for a few days. Don't eat at the outside bar, although the cocktails are pretty good, and the breakfast is superb, although you have to pay for it. Ask for a room with a view of the Golden Horn.

I've not stayed here since the recent extensive refurbishment, but loved the feel of a once grand hotel being slightly down at heel. Service was erratic, but that only added to the charm of a place steeped in history and with an illustrious guestlist ranging from novelist Agatha Christie to Greta Garbo.
The hotel was originally built for guests of the Orient Express arriving in Istanbul. Even if you're not staying here, you can visit the coffee shop for a slice of cake and history.
