On recommendation, I took my wife to Rome for her 60th birthday and we stayed seven days at the Hotel San Carlo. The hotel arranged to have Gianni, a contracted driver, pick us up from the airport.
The room (#76?), one of their best rooms I am told (marble throughout), was comfortable, luxurious, quiet and very clean. In fact the room was one of the highlights of our visit!
Centrally located near the Spanish Steps it could not have been better for on foot touring to the Vatican, Forum, etc. Dante, Vittoria, and the rest of the staff were friendly, very helpful, but not familiar (often mistaken by Americans as uncaring when it is not!). They made our stay with them a great memory.
I would certainly recommend this boutique hotel, but remember to ask for a room that is not in the annex which I hear is not as pleasant as the room we experienced in the main hotel.Recommended for:

A sweet little hotel with a great location just by the Spanish Steps. It feels really welcoming, with rooms that are fancy without being overdone. It has that old style Italian feel, a little formal, spacious, and outside of time, as if modern developments don't matter. For such a central location, it's really reasonably priced, but that is easily explained by the relatively simple nature of the rooms. Still, worth a stay, especially if you are travelling on any kind of a budget.Recommended for:

I found the design of the Hotel San Carlo not that interesting, but it does feature all the amenities. While the service was friendly and not snobby, they weren't going to remember your birthday. The price is reasonable for what you get: simple and comfortable, with some bonuses like a computer in the room. It is located on an adorable Roman street, complete with cobblestones and church bells echoing. It's well located in that it's central but not in the midst of the crowds of tourists.Recommended for:

An independent family-run hotel with excellent prices and an even better location. This is one of our top picks for affordable, comfortable, central accommodation in Rome.Recommended for:

The rooms are nice, but not very luxurious. The location is the best part about this hotel. This hotel is really close to the Spanish Steps. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain and a short walk to the Pantheon. I would stay here again.
