A secret oasis located in Santa Teresa, the bohemian neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Teresa Hotel is the only Relais & Chateaux property in town. Since the hotel is located on a hill, there are beautiful views of the city and beaches to be admired. Chic and tropical in design, this former coffee plantation is a luxurious and unique haven.
Patios and lush gardens are tucked into the property alongside paths that lead to the main building, the pool, the spa and the bar and restaurant area. The restaurant Resto Tereze, adorned with an industrial, wood and steel design, serves award wining French cuisine with a Brazilian flair.
Before and/or after dinner, guests can relax with drinks in the lounge Descasados. A bit of history: this bar is called “The Divorced” because in old Rio when men would be forced out of their homes by their wives, they would come stay at the coffee plantation and gather at the bar. Nowadays the property hosts several weddings, and understandably so most brides don’t want the after party to be held at “The Divorced”. They solve for this by putting a heart over the “des” leaving just casados, which means married and is much more appropriate.
In the gardens the small, panoramic pool with attentive cocktail service offers a cool retreat with a view. A caipirinha on the deck is a must. Inside the main building, dark hallways offering a small relief from the sun and the heat lead to 40 unique and exclusive rooms and suites. All rooms are spacious and carry the same Brazilian chic decor. Some even feature small patios with relaxing hammocks.
To me the most interesting part of this hotel is the design integrating Brazilian and European cultures, just like Brazil. The details within the designs are fascinating, like the coil artwork shown here that is actually made of bottle caps. Or the bar lamps with small trinkets and jewels. It’s these types of intricate details that will keep things interesting. Santa Teresa Hotel is the ideal home in Rio for those looking to escape, get lost in the design, and hideaway in a beautiful, private oasis.

Beautiful hotel in the most romantic location. Be forewarned, they do have occasional problems with robberies and car-jackings on premises. The service is impeccable and the atmosphere is chill and relaxing, but do expect to pay a premium for all the luxury.

Great one of a kind boutique hotel. Charm, ambiance, eclectic design, this property was once a working coffee plantation. If you don't need to be in front of the beach, this hotel is atop of the bohemian santa teresa quarter, with exceptional views of Rio de janeiro. This property is my number one choice in Rio de Janeiro!
