Located in the heart of downtown Cozumel, the bright blue Villas Las Anclas has a handful of 2-story condos decorated in a mish-mash of modern, ‘70s Americana, and traditional Mexican style that somehow works. All the condos have a kitchenette, a/c, and wireless internet; filtered water and coffee grounds are included too. All have one bedroom—at the top of a spiral staircase with no handrail—with two couches that can double as twin beds (perfect for kids, not-so-perfect for full-grown adults). The service is excellent here—attentive but not overbearing. And the location can’t be beat—just steps from the main plaza, the best restaurants on the island, dive shops, and the ferry dock. Small markets are nearby too but if you’re looking for a big supermarket, there’s one within a 15-minute walk/5-minute cab ride. This place fills up fast so be sure to book early if you’re planning a trip during the high season. (Note: The hotel changed owners in early 2012 so changes are likely, hopefully all good!)

I first stayed in Las Anclas ages ago, and it’s still one of my favorite places in Cozumel, and a great deal besides. You can’t beat the location: a short walk from the plaza and nearby several good dive shops and restaurants. It doesn’t really look like much from outside, but the doors open onto a long courtyard with plants and fountains, and the apartment doors lined up along one side. The units have two levels—the kitchen and main room are below and a master bedroom above. There are bathrooms on both floors, and the couches downstairs can double as beds. (The floors are connected by a spiral staircase, which would make me nervous with a toddler; otherwise this is a great spot for families.) There were new owners the last time I visited (mid-2012) and they’d re-painted and were in the middle of replacing the TVs and kitchen appliances.
