Since we were staying at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo in Riviera Maya, we also had access to the sister resorts, so when we took a day trip over to Cozumel, we spent the afternoon at this all-inclusive resort. Although we didn't stay overnight, we met many couples who were guests there who really enjoyed the private location right on the beach. Instead of offering guests standard rooms, at this idyllic rustic outdoor hotel, guests stay in bungalows complete with hammocks and small private patios. Beautiful surrounds with easy access to diving and snorkeling.Recommended for:

I’m not a huge fan of all-inclusive resorts but have stayed at a fair share of them in the Riviera Maya, so have a decent overview of them. And I gotta say, as much as people love the Iberostar in Cozumel, I found it underwhelming. The pros: the beach is nice enough, a bit rocky in places but it’s the beach! (Bring water shoes); the grounds are lush and well-tended; and the gym has a good variety of equipment. The cons: the bungalows themselves are dated in their décor with cheapish furniture and slightly garish colors inside and out; the buffet and snack bar were just OK—the daily selection would get tiresome after a few days (there also are 2 reservation-only restaurants, which are open for dinner that provide some variety). The break evens: there are 3 pools next to each other—a big one for swimming, a tiny one for sunbathing, and a kiddie pool—great if you’re a kid, not so great if you’re looking for some downtime next to the pool (it gets loud). Bottom line: This is the sort of place I’d go with my kids, if I was looking for a place to stay for 3 to 5 nights that had a good pool, a big beach, reliable food, and—this is a must--an online deal.Recommended for:

All-inclusive resorts can be quite expensive, so I’d never fault someone for trying to find a deal, or a resort for trying to offer them. The Iberostar definitely offers packages that put a Riviera Maya vacation within reach of couples and families on a budget. But there’s no free lunch, and you’ve got to expect some corners to be cut at any such destination. Here, the guestrooms leave a lot to be desired. They occupy two story circular towers with incredibly tasteless paint jobs (what’s up with that?) and have a distinctly elderly air: a bit dark, a bit musty, a bit over the hill. On the upside, the beach and pool areas are actually pretty nice, and there’s a friendly boisterous air about the place. Is it the end-all be-all vacation resort? Definitely not. But if you find a good deal, it can make for a pleasant getaway.Recommended for:

We stayed here because we were a mixed group of divers and non-divers. The dive shop on-site was very convenient, only about 10 to 15 minutes away from most dive sites. And the all-inclusive resort provides activities for the non-divers. The buffet meals got boring by the end of the week, but we really enjoyed the Mexican restaurant there. Reservations required, so book ahead.
