Yeah, I'm going to say it: this place has the best pizza in Rome and some of the most delicious pizza in the world! I am a pizza MONSTER and I am very discriminating when it comes to my pies, so this review is truly as good as it gets for a pizza joint.
I found this place on an iPhone Rome Foodie app and decided to check it out. It was listed as the "best pizza in Rome," disputed only with the friendly competition from nearby Forno Campo De' Fiori . I tried both places, and thought Antico Forno Roscioli was better -- WAY better. Apparently people prefer one over the other (sort of like the Philly rivalry between Pat's and Geno's...for the record, I'm a Geno's fan; but I digress).
The pizza here is super thin and super tasty. There's an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks constantly making fresh pizzas and popping them in the ginormous pizza oven. I ate here twice while in Rome and I am sort of ready to plan another trip just to eat here. (That's a true foodie for ya).
What makes this the best pizza ever? The fresh ingredients and simple preparation. You can really taste the saltiness of the crust, the pepper in the olive oil, and the sweetness in the tomatoes. When you see my photos, you'll think "damn, that doesn't LOOK like great pizza" but trust me, it is INSANELY DELICIOUS! This place is the master at simple ingredients prepared well. Period. I especially adored the super crispy, cracker-like thin crust. Different pizzas have different sauces and crusts, so order a variety to see which you like best. My husband lost his mind over the mushroom pizza (see photos). The classic margherita / cheese was my favorite.
There is very limited seating inside with a few stand-up tables out front. If you go at lunch time, be prepared to be absolutely overwhelmed with the chaos inside. You will be jockeying for position with pushy old ladies, gorgeous motorcycle guys in Prada leather jackets, rambunctious school kids and more. There were lots of locals in here both times we went (always a good sign -- locals outnumbered tourists about 5 to 1) and the employees speak Italian (they can communicate in English but you will be rewarded if you learn at least a few food words in Italian).
You belly up to the pizza counter (or bakery counter if you want a sweet) and place your order. The guys chop off portions of pizza with a giant knife (you can tell them more or less), they weigh it, then give you a receipt. You take your receipt over to the cash register and pay. Once you pay, you return to collect your pizza.
BEWARE that if you stop by after lunch time, they ONLY serve classic cheese pizza and tomato bread. We were so disappointed because their special pizzas with all the cool toppings are the BOMB. We also sampled a few baked goods from the bakery (a couple of cakes, a pastry and some croissants) and they were just okay. Don't go here for sweets, go here for the pizza. Go out of your way to eat here -- you will not be disappointed.

A beautiful bakery near Campo de' Fiori, Il Forno Roscioli also runs a restaurant just steps away. If you're looking for Pizza Bianca, this is the best place to get it. Salty, fresh and tasty. Perfect for the road.Recommended for:Foodies
