For a relaxing break from big-city Rio, head to downtown, walk to the pier east of Praça XV, and board a ferry for Ilha de Paquetá. This car-free island, with its colonial buildings, flower-filled plazas and pretty waterfront views makes a breezy half-day trip from the city center. And while it's not an upmarket affair, the island's village-like ambiance and unpaved streets (best negotiated on bicycle, which you can hire at the dock) offer some rewarding exploring. To beat the crowds, go during the week, when you'll have many of those views to yourself.
