Located in the heart of the Owens Valley, it is easy to zoom right through it on 395 as you're headed toward Bishop and Mammoth Lakes. However, it's worth a stop.
Independence is home to the Eastern California Museum offering a vast collection of historical artifacts from the Eastern Sierras. Professionally run, it is a fun educational experience. For literature fans, Independence is also the site of the home of Mary Austin. The county courthouse is a reminder of life 100+ years ago and the library located at the courthouse basement has available copies of the Inyo Independent, the principal newspaper from the 1880s for a peak at everyday life when the area was part of the Wild West.
