I'm always in two minds when it comes to staying in one of the 'chain gang' and if you travelled frequently to Eastern Europe and Arab countries during the 1970s, Intercontinental often used to be the only option for something of a decent international standard. Make no mistake, the Intercontinental Semiramis is an architectural monstrosity - like so many of the high rise buildings which now line the section of the Nile which runs through central Cairo. This property opened in 1987 after its Saudi backers had to twice halt construction, owing to financing problems. The rooms are comfortable - especially Club level rooms on the 18th and 19th floors. The views are also hard to beat: you can see part of Tahrir Square on one side and sweeping views of the Nile and across to Gezira Island. While the Club rooms come at a slight premium, the light meals and and free drinks during the nightly happy hour can be a lighter alternative to dinner out. There's a pool on the fourth floor, but like so many of the hotels along this stretch of the Corniche, it can be a bit windswept. Wi-fi is avaialable in the lobby and club room, but is via ethernet cable only in the rooms.
Dining options at Intercontinental Cairo Semiramis include a restaurant and a bar/lounge. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Recreational amenities include an outdoor pool, a health club, a spa tub, a sauna, and a fitness
