Madrid was my favorite city in Spain and I think a big part of that was the hostel where I stayed. Posada de Huertas is located in the heart of the city. I stayed in a room with seven other guys, which really cut down the cost. We got along very well and frequently hit the town together. The communal kitchen and dining areas also contributed to the cameraderie. One night I made spaghetti and meatballs for a number of my fellow backpackers and we sat around for hours telling stories.

Geared towards the younger crowd and those traveling on a budget, this hostel is a true blend of simplicity and the comforts of home. Buy groceries in any of the several nearby markets and cook in the fully-stocked kitchen to cut additional (money) corners. The terrace-like area indoor filled with flora and fluna is the perfect place to unwind and relax after a long day of touristing or to map out your day before you set out. If bunk beds aren’t your thing, this might not be the hostel for you. Most every room has a bunk bed (or two). Free Wi-Fi throughout makes it easy to stay connected and check emails.

The International Youth Hostel La Posada de Huertas is in an incredible location, on one of Madrid's prettiest streets. When I got to the reception the guys working there were super friendly and were cracking jokes with everyone. The rooms, bathrooms and halls were being scrubbed while I was there too and the whole place smelled super clean!
There's free wifi and the lockers are really safe and spacious too so you've got plenty of room for all of your stuff.

While I wouldn’t call this the be-all-and-end-all of low-cost lodging, Posada de Huertas certainly gets most things right. Lockers were big with plenty of room for your backpack and a reading light attached to each bed is a perk if you plan to study your guidebook but don’t want to wake your bunkmate below. Also, exterior rooms have little balconies - a nice spot to stand (it is standing room only), drink your morning coffee and take in the enchanting medieval Madrid street below. I didn’t chance my arm in the kitchen, but it was big and appeared well-stocked with pots, pans and utensils. It did have a bit of a whiff of fried food to it, but, hey, you’re not in the Ritz. Also, the TV area wasn’t the most inviting (just a table in front of the tube, no sofas) - but I’m not quite sure why you’d want to sit and watch TV in Madrid anyway. One thing I would say, apart from the kitchen and spartan TV room this hostel isn’t well-endowed wih communal areas for hanging out and meeting up. Check out the local bar Quevedo (ask the hostel staff for directions) - it serves some the most generous and sustaining tapas in the city (you’ll eat dinner for the price of three beers).

A big and busy hostel in my favourite part of Madrid. The neighbourhood is charming, trendy and close to both Puerta del Sol and the main three museums. And though it’s a relatively upmarket barrio (in a good way - think artists with money), there are reasonably-priced taverns and cool new bars abound. Front desk was 24 hours, all the staff spoke good English and were generally a helpful bunch. Plus, when you check in they give you a little information pack with a map of Madrid and a print out with museum opening hours, sights to see etc. The rooms and facilities are starting to show a touch of wear (apparently it was one of the first youth hostels in the city), but the place is clean, efficiently run and has a friendly feel to it. Communal toilets and showers were spotless, and the washing machine (with a reasonable price-per-load) was a godsend. Tip: if you’re all alone and need to make friends pronto, check out the hostel’s pub crawl - at €10, with a few drinks included, it’s a hell of a deal.
