Ismet Baba is in the Üsküdar district, on the Asian side of the city, a short ferry crossing from Besiktas or Eminönü. Restaurants in Istanbul are spoiled with options for fresh seafood. It seems every neighborhood has at least one decent fish restaurant. But most are mere copies of places like Ismet Baba, where traditions have been kept sacred for more than fifty years. While many of the restaurants on the more touristy European side can be kitschy, Ismet is gritty and authentic. This may not be the best restaurant in the city, but it’s got something most of the others have lost, a throwback to an old-school style of Istanbul charm and character.
The catch of the day and its price per portion are posted on a small black board in the dining room.
