As one of the first biological research stations founded in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Jatun Sacha was at one time situated in a remote wilderness location. As development has progressed in the "Oriente", this area is no longer so much pristine wilderness as just a great place to be. Catching the downdrafts at the foot of the Andes, it has a much better climate than most of the Amazon, is very easy to access, and there's a lot to do. An adjacent tiki-style bar, called "the laboratory" is known for wild nights amongst locals, scientists and international volunteers alike. Many of the larger mammals, which unfortunately includes monkeys, are now rare due to over-hunting. However, the surrounding forest is a bird, reptile/amphibian and plant-lovers paradise. Try climbing the somewhat scary bird tower and be sure to take a canoe ride to visit some of the local Quichua communities who call this area home.
