    Old City of Jerusalem

    5
    72 reviews

This place is timeless and feels magical. There is history under every step (literally! the new streets are built over old Roman roads) and something to see everywhere you turn. The shops are great, and it's easy to get lost in there for days.

    Church of the Holy Sepulchre

    4.5
    33 reviews

There is so much going on in this one building, it takes a while to see it all. Each section has a vastly different feel. Definitely worth taking a guide book or a tour to understand the intricacies of the Church.

    Damascus Gate

This is my favorite section of the old city. The market just inside the gate is one of the best, and the restaurant across the street has the best shwarma in the city.

    Mount of Olives

    4.5
    31 reviews

Significant for both Jews and Christians the Mount of Olives covers a broad area and offers views of Old Jerusalem. With the many political upheavals and the many merchants who abound the area it's difficult to generate spirituality.

All of the old city gates are unique, but this is one of the best! Great photo spot, and a nice section of the old city to explore.

    Armenian Quarter

This quarter has some of the most interesting architecture, in my opinion. The Armenian pottery is so unique and makes a great souvenir.

    Dome of the Rock

    20 reviews

This site is as historic as it is controversial. If you plan to visit, be sure to make arrangements well in advance, as it is not always open to the public (especially during times of Israel-Palestinian conflict). You will have to go through a checkpoint to reach the Temple Mount complex, so leave plenty of extra time. That said, this ...

    Yad Vashem

    4.5
    20 reviews

Everything about the Holocaust can be found here in the museum and other bldgs dedicated to the victims. About more than a decade ago, it didn't interest me much since I had seen the original horrors of that holocaust in Auschwitz. It was filled then with mostly photos. Now you can find more videos actual mementoes of the victims, a ...

Basilica of the Agony of the Lord

After hiking here in the heat, the coolness of the church was the first thing I noticed. However, once I caught my breath, the stunning interior absolutely blew me away. Outside is a grove of gnarly, ancient olive trees and gorgeous flowers flowing over the walls.

    Grotto of Gethsemane

    3 reviews

This is one of the most serene places to visit in Jerusalem. It wasn't too crowded when we visited, which was a nice break from the bustle of some of the more popular sites. Be sure to visit the church nearby as well.

Hidden gem! The church of the sisters of Zion is right on Via Dolorosa, but is small and rather unassuming from the outside. However, once you descend to the ancient Roman streets, the picture changes completely. In some spots, you can still make out carvings by bored Roman soldiers in the street stones. Gave me chills!

    Shrine of the Book

The roof of the building is designed to mimic the jars in which the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. The scrolls themselves were amazing and their historical context is evident in the display. Overall a museum.

Gorgeous, peaceful church located right on Via Dolorosa. It is now part of the sisters of Zion convent, which is impressive in its own right.

    Al-Aqsa Mosque

    4.5
    5 reviews

Steeped in controversy, this massive mosque is located on the historic Temple Mount. Entry is difficult, although there are certain times when tourists may gain admission. Plan in advance if you want to visit. Also - don't confuse the mosque with the nearby Dome of the Rock, which dominates the Jerusalem skyline.

High end shopping, just outside the Old City. The shops here are very unique, and the area is beautiful and well kept. Great for an afternoon stroll, even if you're only window shopping.

Another beautiful church. The emphasis on world languages is very cool to see, as well as the impressive architecture.
