While the wildly touristed Blue Mountains receive almost all the press as Sydney's must-do day trip, the jaunt down to Jervis Bay and the spectacular beaches, headlands, and forest of the Booderee National Park qualifies for many Sydneysiders as more rewarding. The peninsula has some of Australia's most underground surf spots at Wreck Bay, stretches of white sand and great snorkelling in the calm waters of Murray's Beach and Green Patch, a ruined lighthouse, fine hiking trails, and a colony of breeding penguins on an island just offshore. Better still? It's still off the map for most tourists, and less than 3 hours' drive from Sydney.
