In the event that I can one day afford to live in an impeccably designed penthouse apartment, the suites of the JIA hotel offer a glimpse of how I imagine it would look (provided I am also able to hire a team of talented European designers). In the meantime, I will happily settle for a stay in one of the 55 rooms of this centrally located, sassily refurbished hotel—a recent fire necessitated a fairly significant overhaul of the space. What stands now is a hip hotel in an old 1920s building that is absolutely dripping with character. And if that’s not enough, the attached restaurant Issimo serves up some seriously delicious Italian cuisine. The creamy Gorgonzola gnocchi was an otherworldly experience for my taste buds!

Hidden around the corner from busy Nanjing Xi Lu is the JIA hotel. It’s easy to miss the door, but once you’re inside you know it’s the right place. The lobby is on the 3rd floor, which is tribute to guest privacy and keeps out the wandering eyes of Nanjing Lu. The hotel is a design driven hotel, and that is evident in every detail. The lobby has quirky furniture and hidden doors; as well as evening drinks for in house guests. The rooms are well thought out and impeccably stylish. It’s no wonder that Movie stars, socialites and athletes that are in the know choose the JIA when they come to Shanghai. The hotel is unpretentious, placing standard rooms next to penthouse suites and thinking nothing of it. It’s just cool, man. The second floor is home to Issimo, the hotel’s Italian restaurant that boasts some of the best food in town. A great location and edgy rooms make this hotel the obvious choice for a traveler looking for a trendy home away from home.Recommended for:Trendsters

Very cool hidden away hotel just off of Nanjing Road right by the metro station. Entrance is pretty hard to find so be a bit patient, it’s not directly on the street, just half a block behind the Adidas store and totally worth it. The lobby is on the 3rd floor of the building which is a nice touch because is well removed from the busy surrounding areas. Lobby has complimentary happy hour of wine every evening for hotel guests, a nice touch when getting back from a long day of shopping or before heading out for dinner and a night on the town. The rooms are great, very design driven like the rest of the hotel décor complete with board games in the rooms and kitchen facilities. Feels much like you’re visiting a very cool friend’s apartment. The hotel restaurant Issimo is a Shanghai staple and well known for their Italian style wood fired pizzas.
