Mostly known because of Petra but it has hundreds of other places worth visiting such as Jerash, an ancient Roman City and its capital of course Amman.

I fell in love with this country. The people are so warm and friendly and the food it great. Petra is so beautiful, we wish we would have spent more time here. Camping out in Wadi Rum is a must! Planning to go back again.

Definitely one of my favorite countries. The awesome historical and natural sites, the fascinating culture- at once so exotic and yet so familiar, the food, and the friendly people... all incredible. I am so enthusiastic about this place. I'm sure part of this has something to do with two of my favorite movies: Indiana Jones (Petra) and Lawrence of Arabia (Wadi Rum) but, really, that only partially accounts for the sites.

I am also having limited time in Jordam, thus I designed my trip with a rent-a-car as follows - overnight in Madaba (it is close to the airport), then straight to Wadi Rum. Then spend a day and the night in the desert. Then go to Aqaba and have half/full day of diving. Then go north to Petra and hike around for a day. You can enjoy the Dead Sea also from Israel, so try crossing the border somewhere close to Dead Sea. Personally, I do not like the big cities (i.e. Amman) so I plan to skip it :)

Jordan can be a dangerous place. On my way to see the ruins of King Herod's castle, the place where John the Baptist's head was served up on a platter, two guys tried to kill me. I mean, why else would they get on the bus with a container full of gasoline and light up a cigarette right next to me? Don't worry though, I didn't die (at least not yet, anyway). I personally recommend traveling with your skateboard (as I was) because if you are, transportation, even if you're going to see the place where Salome, the legendary seductress (that's a stripper to you and me) was served Prophet Yahya's noggin' on a silver tray, is a not a problem. The killer views of the Dead Sea there make King Herod's Castle one of the most beautiful places in the world to get decapitated. So if you go to Jordan (and you should) bring your skate and your sense of humor, both will come in VERY handy :-)

Description

Want to stroll through the Bible? Try visiting Jordan. Across the Dead Sea just to the east of Israel, the nearly landlocked country has a history dating back 4000, and any ancient civilization of consequence tried to set up shop here at some point -- Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, the British. With over 100 sights from the Bible alone, Jordan lays claim to the caves where Lot lived with his daughters, and the river where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Although the three monotheistic religions consider Jordan an important part of their religious landscape, any archaeological buffs worth their weight in Roman tomb stones has Jordan on their list. As a central trading hub for the Roman Empire in the Fertile Crescent, Jordan's has been gifted with one of the world's most stunning archaeological sites, Petra. Declared as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, ancient Nabataean carved Petra directly out of sandstone thousands of years ago, and remarkably remains well preserved to this day. Don't leave right away; check out the Crusader castle at Kerak, the 12th century Islamic fortress at Ajlun and the extensive 2300-year-old Roman ruins at Jerash. ... read more
