Is PR a good vacation to take a 4 and 6 year old? We are looking around at various destinations and are considering PR We want a place with a beach/resort but also some cultural activities and fun things to do. We would also like to be able to leave our kids with a babysitter and feel safe doing so. Anyone have any experience with this?

I am from Puerto Rico and am a little biased of course, but yes PR is an ideal place for families traveling with kids. There are many beaches all over the island and some of them are extremely safe for kids. You may want to try "Balneario de Puerto Nuevo en Vega Baja", just to give you an example.
The Old San Juan Historic District has several parks including one near El Morro Fort " Castillo de San Cristobal. Here you will find a large field, which is typically used for flying kites. There is a free trolley that takes you around the Historic Center. You might want to try "La lancha de Catano", which is used for public transportation (50 cents per person), but many tourists take to round trip from Old San Juan to Catano.
The town of Camuy offers the Natural Park with Caves, but make sure you make a reservation since the lines are usually huge. Not to far from Camuy, in the town of Arecibo, you can visit the largest radiotelescope on Earth. There is a hands-on science museum, which is ideal for kids.
In Carolina, there is a new Kids Museum in which you could spend all day. There is something similar in Bayamon called "Parque de la Ciencias (Science Park)".
El Yunque Natural Rain Forest in the town of Luquillo is a must. I believe your kids will love this place. If you go, try to walk (about 30 minutes) to La Mina Falls. On your way back to Luquillo you may try the Luquillo Public Beach "Balneario de Luquillo". It is really beautiful and the sea is always calm.
Please go to the website of el Fideicomiso de Conservacion. They have several pieces of land, which are now protected and many of them offer one-day or half-day trips to the Luminiscent Bay or Parque de las Cabezas de San Juan. If you love nature, this is the place to start your search.
As far as resorts and hotels, I cannot offer much help since every time I visit I stayed with relatives or friends. However, I believe that many resort-type beach hotels such as the ones in Fajardo and Dorado offer day care services with certified teachers.
