    Not to miss when you are in El Salvador. A unique and very interesting archeological sight. It offers an insight into daily life an common people unlike the temples found in Guatemala and Mexico.

Description

Preserved under layers of volcanic ash, Joya de Cerén was a small, pre-Hispanic farming community that was abandoned in AD 600 due to the eruption of Loma Caldera, a nearby volcano. Much like Pompeii, the ash left an impeccably intact village that gives anthropologists a clear insight into this civilization's cultures and practices. eruption, but a number of utensils, farming tools, ceramics and more were left behind. Discovered in 1976, this archeological find was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site 17 years later in 1993.
