- Mare135 Richmond Street, Boston, MA 02109-1414recommended MareThe food was good. The raw oysters and clams appetizer was GREAT. But the wait time for food must have been really skewed because of restaurant week - I don't blame them, the restaurant was buzzing ... read morewith people coming in and out none stop but it did more than decrease my otherwise pleasant experience expecting our entrees for almost an hour on otherwise rather empty stomach. The restaurant was brightly lighted, already filled with laughters of patrons, raw bar on display with tantalizing shellfishes, and menu scripted on the mirror on the opposite wall - quaint, comfortable, beautiful. We ordered off the restaurant week menu - the Secondi was distinctly different from the one published online (no rock crab spaghetti or stuffed calamari), but tuna and salmon were on the menu and I'm more than happy with the new choices. I took the raw oysters and clams appetizer, truffle crusted tuna seared rare and tiramisu for dessert. The olive oil for the complimentary bread was amazing, it has a distinct taste to it that made the bread that much more flavorful. My oysters were amazing, all three dipping sauces complimented each other wonderfully - two are ginger, garlic based and one cocktail, a small spoonful of each onto the shells, one small sip and it slips seamlessly across my taste buds into my tummy. All the flavors enhances the freshness of the raw oysters. The wait for our entrees was rather long, again by the sheer number of patrons that night I can imagine the backlog, we waited and expected everytime our waiter passed by but the entrees didn't come until almost a hour after the appetizer plate was taken away. My truffle crusted tuna was good, the searing was done perfectly, the meat is lean and rare as expected. I thought the crusting was a little harsh and it could have used a little more sauce for flavor. But it was on top of a bed of perfectly marinated, tender spinaches, no complaints. My friend's homemade gnocchi was amazing, this is one of the times where the quality of taste between handmade and factory produced pasta cannot be contented - chewy soft texture for the gnocchi, masterfully flavored cherry tomato sauce, delicious. The tiramisu with lady fingers, coffee amaretti and mascarpone was also done to perfection, fluffy moist texture of tiramisu soaked in rum, accompanied by sweet (but not overly) and creamy mascarpone. Exemplarily done.

There are some extraordinary seafood places in Boston, the quality would be much better than what you would find at Legal. If you are willing to take the T and go into the city a bit, there is Alive and Kicking Lobsters and Island Creek Oyster Bar in Cambridge; Neptune Oyster Bar, Mare Oyster Bar and Daily Catch at north end. North end is walkable from the waterfront but it's some distance away.

You can get spectacular towers of seafood or stay more circumspect with a plate.Julia P

Hey Joyce, Legal Seafood is okay but I think you can do much better in Boston for seafood - you just won't necessarily find it within a short walk of the Westin. I did like this place on the Waterfront, however - might be worth a try!
