    McWay Falls

0.94 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    1 review

McWay Falls is one of the quintessential views along Highway 1, just about an hour south of Carmel. It's a fairly level and easy walk out from the highway to get a view of the falls and the coast. Well worth the stop.

One of the most scenic and memorable stretches along Highway 1. The views are amazing, there are a ton of places to stop and take photos, and it is definitely worth the drive from San Francisco.

    Pfeiffer Beach

10.6 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    20 reviews

This is my favorite beach in all of California. It's such an interesting place with massive rock formations and cliffs, it's like a scene from a movie. Cheap to get into, and being so isolated means you don't have to deal with a lot of people at any given time - and if you do they're probably locals anyway. Ask ...

    Andrew Molera State Park

14.33 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    16 reviews

This is a great state park and beach. There's a first come first served camp group good for spontaneous trips to Big Sur. The beach is really nice. You have to hike for a little bit to get there, so it doesn't get too crowded. Excellent for surfing without competing for waves or just having fun in the sand.

The Point Sur Historic Park is south of Andrew Molera. There's a lighhouse set on a big rock sitting in the water. You can take a tour to the top, but it's a moderately strenuous hike.

    Mill Creek Redwood Preserve

17.71 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    4 reviews

The trail through the Mill Creek Redwood Preserve is one of the best day hikes in the Big Sur area. Easy on the lungs as there is very little elevation change, the trail itself moves through numerous habitat types, offering a never-ending panorama of new and beautiful California wilderness scenery. Most impressive are the massive redwoods it goes through, but ...

    Mount Manuel Trail

9.36 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    2 reviews

One of my favorite Big Sur hikes, the Mount Manuel Trail begins in the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park parking lot but heads deep into the Ventana backcountry. The trail begins as a lazy incline, wrapping around the massive Mount Manuel, but on the backside begins to wind in and out of various forest types and through some pretty dynamic ...

    East Molera Trail

Andrew Molera State Park is interesting since you can visit the ocean and hike from that, through redwoods, into a drier clime. In the space of a couple of hours you can experience several biotomes. East Molera is on the other side of the highway from the ocean.

    Palo Colorado Road Trail

16.02 mi from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
    2 reviews

Yeah, it's a road, but it's also not open to traffic and it happens to be one of the most gorgeous tracts of mountain landscape on the California Coast. Head downhill from Botcher's Gap and cut into adjacent trailheads along the way - or just hike the road. It's not really so much a road as an experience...

One of the most impressive peaks of the Ventana Wilderness and the most imposing as viewed from the Pacific Coast Highway. Rumored to hold the largest deposit of pure limestone in North America, the mountain is a point of contention between mining companies and the California agencies seeking to protect it. It is also a mountain of cultural significance in ...

Just about the only place to rent camping and backpacking gear in Big Sur, if you neglected to bring your own tent, sleeping bag, etc. If you don't find what you're looking for here, some camping supplies are sold (but not rented) at the Big Sur Lodge's general store inside Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Park farther south along Hwy 1.
