Julius Ceasar Pub

Via Castelfidardo, 49, Rome, Province of Rome, Italy

This is actually a pretty chill, laid back bar. I'm only speaking of the bar area, not the B&B. They make really good kamikazee's, or any mixed drink rather. That's more their specialty than beer. It's darkly lit, and not too loud, but not quiet enough that you hear aeveryone else. There's no dancing, but there is light music playing. ...

    Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

0.59 mi from Julius Ceasar Pub
    58 reviews

Beautiful church with high, ornate ceilings and countless altars. It's elaborate and grand and makes you feel small without making you feel insignificant. It's a little known fact that the tomb of Gianlorenzo Bernini rests here; blink and you could miss the step indicating its location. It's also said that there are remnants of Jesus' baby crib kept here, though ...

Hip plaza near the Spanish steps. Always something going on. You can buy cheap souvenirs or hire an expensive horse and carriage, so there is more than a faint whiff of the commercial. But that shouldn't be enough to spoil it.

    Capuchin Crypt

0.73 mi from Julius Ceasar Pub
    15 reviews

This succession of rooms below the Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata at the base of the Via Veneto is one of Rome's best secrets. Capuchin monks unearthed the bones of 400 or so of their brethren and created this multi-room sculpture/meditation on the ephemeral nature of our earthly existence. Seeing pelvic bones arrayed in fan shapes and vertebrae in trailing ...

This quaint little museum was on my list of to-do while in Rome. I scored free tickets with a fee so instead of paying 15 euro, we paid 4 euro each. Not bad! You have to reserve your tickets in advance and they do them in 2 hour blocks so as to not overwhelm visitors. It used to be a ...

This building used to be the Papal stables but is now used to house special exhibitions. We saw an incredible exhibition of the Baroque painter Caravaggio in 2010. Check the schedule to see what might be on.

My first sight of this corner was from the back of a motorino, and it crystallized the particular beauty of Rome for me. On this traffic choked four way intersection, air heavy with smog, these four incredibly elegant statues stand watch, reminding us of the layers upon layers of time the city has seen.

The fountains and grounds are undeniably the show stealer. The house is quite the mansion, but it's the gardens you want to be in. It's so calm and beautiful...romantic even - you might find yourself in a "moment." It'd be a fabulous venue for private events, but I've been told they don't do that sort of thing.

One of my favorite fountains in Rome. I really loved the monument here, the detail in the sculpture work is really nice. I also love the bronzed color. It's a great piece to photograph.

You would be hard pressed to find a friendlier bar in Monti. Independently owned and run by Calabrian Margherita, who never takes off her tango heels, locals and newcomers alike come here and stay longer than they planned. Their wine list is excellent as well; try the Nero di Troia.

If I could live anywhere in Rome, it would be in Monti. Hip restaurants, classic Italian boutiques, and a central location between the Colosseum, Centro Storico and the Trevi Fountain make it a must-see neighborhood. Small streets that aren't crowded at night lead to a piazza where young folk congregate with pizza slices and beers. My favorite gelateria (Fatamorgana) is ...

Step through the unassuming entrance to this amazing church located in a building that used to house Roman baths. You will be greeted by a grand dome topped with an incredible stained glass image of the solar system. Inside, you can admire the old meridian which, until the mid 1800s, was used to set the clocks in Rome.

Rome's palm tree filled Piazza is just behind Termini Station and, these days, filled with Indian and Chinese markets, as well as renowned quirky discount Emporium MAS. One of those treasures that's all too common in Rome, Santa Maria della Vittoria houses the incredible Bernini sculpture "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa" so circumspectly that you'd never know it was there. The church is beautiful, but the sculpture itself, like so many of Bernini's works, is truly masterful.
