Right inside the picturesque Jupiter Inlet sits the Jupiter Lighthouse. Maybe it's because it was really the first Lighthouse I'd ever seen up close, but I was stricken by the scale and absurdity of the structure. It's difficult to imagine the use of a lighthouse today, when lights dot the entirety of almost every coast in the United States. It is pretty neat to imagine a time when it was necessary, though.

Have dinner across the inlet at Jetty's, sit on the patio, and enjoy the view. Otherwise, take a (short) hike down to the beach, play in the sand, and marvel at the lighthouse.

I happen to really like history and lighthouses and this site is chock full of both! Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum offers climbing tours of the landmark 1860 Jupiter Light and exhibits in the waterfront History Museum located in the restored WWII Naval housing quarters building. Outdoor exhibits include the Lighthouse Keeper's Workshop, Tindall Pioneer Homestead & Seminole Chickee huts. It’s a wonderful place to take in some local history and spend a lovely afternoon by the water.

Description

Lighthouses do not necessarily come to mind when you think about Florida, yet many of the towering beacons dot the state's miles of coastline. One of the most interesting is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum, located in the Palm Beach area. Built in 1860, its red colored exterior and vantage point atop a hill make it a standout on the landscape. During the Civil War Confederate troops darkened the lighthouse, and in the 1950's it was damaged by a hurricane, yet it operates today using the original lens from the mid-1800's.
