On a nice day in SF, there's a bunch of people that sit around near the waterfall, on the steps, or on the outside tables either having lunch or a good conversation. One of the best memories I have of this place is during a Zipline demonstration 2 years ago, and a few Valentine's Day Pillow Fight events. And just across the street is the Ferry Building. This is an area I visit often during the year.

Oh vast expanse, quiet night and sweet starlight... Do yourself a favor and check out Justin Herman Plaza at night, when all the crowds dissipate and it's just you and the open space and sky. The Ferry Building Marketplace illuminates just in front of you, and the sounds of the streetcar can be heard just to the right. Is this San Francisco? Rarely is there such a quiet, open plaza for your enjoyment. No, I think it might be Heaven.Recommended for:Art & Design Lovers

The Plaza that looks like an afterthought, named after the architect of S.F.'s disastrous-in-hindsight postwar Redevelopment plan. Anchored at one end by the ugly Vaillancourt Fountain and the other by the Hyatt Recency, it serves only as a magnet to skateboarders and flash mobs. Befuddled tourists swivel their heads, overscheduled office workers bustle through on their way to the Ferry Building. The temporary skating rink fills the Plaza during the holiday season. Otherwise it is nothing.

I have spent many of days just relaxing here during a lunch time or between classes just people watching. This is easy to accomplish as it is just right across the way from the ferry building and close to many hotels based in the financial district. You will see all kinds of people here walking around, from the homeless to the business men in suits.
There are often events that take place here and there are markets that occur here as well to buy knicknacks.

Justin Herman Plaza lies in between the Ferry Building (and the Embarcadero) and the start of Market Street. It was named after Justin Herman, who was once the head of San Francisco's the Redevelopment Agency in the 1960s.
During my occasional visits over the years, I have gone ice skating in the winter, hung out at the nearby Hyatt and Embarcadero shopping area, watched the skateboard crowd bust their moves, and climbed around that weird fountain. It's a nice place to hang out on a nice day or to meet someone to start yet another San Francisco adventure.
