- JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai at Tomorrow SquareJul 05, 2012
At the heart of Tomorrow Square, overlooking busting People’s Square is the unmistakable JW Marriott. The building itself is a Shanghai landmark due it its bizarre pointed roof that is lit up at night, with different colors. The JW has everything you would expect from a high-end business hotel. The lobby is located on the 38th floor, which can be a bit confusing, but there are helpful staff available to assist you if need be. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and have everything you would expect them to. Simple and functional. There are several dining outlets, but the one that comes with the highest recommendation is JW’s, their steakhouse. It’s a favorite among guests and local residents. If you’ve got street cred with Marriott and have access to their executive lounge then make your way up the staircase to the 60th floor and find yourself in the world’s highest library. It’s more of a meeting room with books, but hey, world’s highest library sounds cooler. If you make your way down to the pool and fitness center on the 5th and 6th floors, you will be rewarded for navigating the somewhat tricky elevators when you reach the outdoor pool. Both an indoor and outdoor pool make this a mini oasis during the hot Shanghai summer. With sweeping views of People’s Square you can admire the city from above, and enter the thick of it when you step out the front door.Recommended for:

The distinctive architecture of the JW Marriott may be the feature for which the hotel is best known, but the true highlights are waiting inside. Stepping off the elevator on the 38th floor lobby, visitors are greeted by a distinct scent that I wouldn’t be entirely averse to wearing as a perfume. The high ceilings, plush furniture and impressive staircase all provide an unmistakable air of luxury, echoed throughout the elegantly outfitted bedrooms and suites. One of my personal favorite features of the hotel is the executive library—the highest library in the world. It is accessible up a steep winding staircase and is a silent sanctuary perfect for curling up with a good book or for hosting small private functions. The upper-deck outdoor pool, though small, is one of only a handful in the city and is a nice place to soak up some rays (Shanghai smog not withstanding).Recommended for:

I can't say anything bad about this hotel (hence, the 5* rating). Service was top shelf. The views are outstanding (we did have exec. level rooms, but our kids in the 40's also had nice views). The hotel is convenient to everything (and a 5 minute walk from the biggest "fakes" market in Shanghai, if you're into that kind of thing). That said, it has the kind of cold, manicured feel of so many top-flight business hotels...you could be staying in Tokyo, NYC, or London and hardly notice a difference. Looking back, I personally would have enjoyed the quirky charm and elegance of the pre-revolution Friendship Hotel on the Bund. But then, I'm a sucker for the art deco dream palace of the 1920s.Recommended for:

The JW Marriot provided a large corner room with a great views around the city. The bathroom was also spacious. The location is very convenient to the trains and walking about. It's very close to Nanjing and onward to the bund. The best part is that the JW is very distinctive in the skyline and its easy to use to orient yourself. you don't have rely so much on a map. Just find the building and head in the direction. We did have some confusion upon check in about whether or not breakfast was included. This seemed to be a common issue on my travels in china.make sure you grab screen shots while you are booking and have the proof of what you purchased with you. The confirmation emails might lack the details.

By far one of the most recognizable buildings in Shanghai and possibly Asia, the JW Marriott Tower is home to some of Shanghai's nicer hotels and some of the best views of the city. Located right in the heart of the city and overlooking People's Square the JW tower is also home to a Ferrari dealership and just down the block from a Maserati dealership, Shanghai has some crazy money. When traveling Marriott's are always kind of hit or miss depending on what part of the world you're in but in Asia they are definitely a hit. The rooms at the JW are everything you'd expect from this brand along with jaw dropping views (as long as it's a clear day), you can see for miles. The indoor/outdoor pool is also a rarity in a city where the summer is usually more smoggy than sunny so the JW is definitely a great option for beach bunnies stranded in the city.
